The Practically Happy show is celebrating it’s one year anniversary.
It’s been a good year — much learning, and lots of listens by people all over.

I am interested in publishing Practically Happy shows with content contributed by listeners for the “in-between” weeks. Click the About tab for more details.

Show 022 Comments:
From grinner
I have been concerned about credit card use on the internet for a long time. I finally got a card with a $500 limit. It was an MBNA card through a stock broker. I also found out about the one time use capability and have used it for all of my on-line purchases.
The main problem I have is with vendors who require you to enter your credit card information before you get a total cost. Usually you can pretty much determine a total but shipping and handling are not always available until you get the the final page. Amazon was one site that had this 'feature'. I ended up buying the same product from the company Amazon was brokering for.
Anyone else (of the millions who sign on here) have any thoughts this issue?
Response from PracticallyHappy
The MBNA credit card ShopSafe allows you to adjust the limit of the one-time use credit card.
So you generate the number, go through the vendors screens (getting the final cost with shipping), then you adjust the one-time use credit card number to the "new" total.
A bit more work, but it does work.
Vendors need to get smarter or they might find that they the cause of the abandoned shopping carts.

Probably the best place to get information about any game is the BoardGame Geek website. It has descriptions, photos, strategy tips, variants and fun articles on individual games.

Since recording this podcast a few weeks ago, the Sony Root Kit fiasco has been brought to light. I'm not sure that I can support Sony products any longer due to their arrogance and disdain for their paying customers.
Great product. Abhorrent company attitude.
Show 004 Comments:
From Bill
I was really excited to read about this product — ACID music!
I have written quite a number of songs over the years, but they were simply lyrics sung to a tune. My impression, from reading the package of an ACID music display at best buy, is that I could take my recorded lyrics, and blend them with guitar riff, base, drum and keyboard after developing some proficiency with the software. This is incredibly cool! Now, just to find the time to play with this!
I'm one of the singers with a "rock band" leading our church's "ultracontemporary" worship service. I submitted a couple of songs to our band leader, but the arrangement consisted of me singing in a wav file. How lame is that?

Response from PracticallyHappy
Thanks for listening alkahestsearch.
It sounds like you are being practically happy — the cliche is that it's the little things in life that make you happy, and I agree with that.

Show Date: 11/01/05

Only you know what makes you happy, and, more importantly, you are in control of whether you want to allow yourself to feel happy.
Others might be able to assist, but the responsibility lies with you.
Jim Matt is here to share what makes him happy, and why it makes him happy. Perhaps you'll share in the things (ideas, products, services, organizations) that he presents, or better yet, it will spur you into thinking of what makes you happy.
Show 001 Comments:
From Amy S.
Interesting thoughts, Jim!
I agree; we really are responsible for our own happiness, but not many people stop to realize that.
I have been a student of Buddhism for many years and that is exactly what the Buddha taught; all material things are temporary anyways, even life is temporary, so Be Happy with the moment and stop wanting things and that is the (simplified) key to "enlightment" or in this podcast's format; happiness.
Keep up the good work. I will be listening and even posting occasionally.
Amy
Response from PracticallyHappy
Glad to have you as a listener Amy.
Looking for the positive in a situation is sometimes a challenge, but it's really the only way to try for happiness more often.
Another facet of the Buddhist view that life is temporal is the saying "This too shall pass." That goes for bad periods as well as good periods. Enjoy the good ones while you are in them, and while in the bad ones realize that they will change, eventually.
From Bill
Practically Happy,
This is way overdue, I have been listening to several of the podcasts and have found some very good ideas. I'll try to respond to those in the appropriate show related forum.
Regarding your first show:
I remembered the following phrase from somewhere:
"Most people are about as happy as they set their minds to be".
I found, in a recent Web search that this statement is attributed to Abraham Lincoln.
I think he's right, and I think this goes along with what you're saying.
One thing from this show I wanted to reply to was your comment that "we are all going to die and we will all die alone". As a Christian, I disagree with the second part of the statement. I believe that the Lord Jesus is with me and will always be with me, regardless of how alone I appear to be or how alone I might feel.
Further, I think that happiness "techniques" might increase my sense of contentment for a time, but without God filling the Christ shaped hole in the center of my life, true joy and contentment will forever elude me.
Response from PracticallyHappy
I'm glad that you've found that Christianity (and Jesus) makes you practically happy, Bill.
The Practically Happy podcast is not techniques per se, just as Christianity is not a technique that makes believers practically happy. It's about things that I've found that make me practically happy, and a little thinking as to why.
Thanks for listening.
